Four rules that hold up
Only money you can afford to lose
Not rent, not savings, not borrowed money. If losing the amount would change your month, it is too much.
Decide the session length first
Set a stop time before you start, not while you are down. A clock is a better stop-loss than a feeling.
Never chase
Increasing stakes to recover a loss is the single most reliable way to turn a bad session into a bad year.
Track everything
Deposits, withdrawals, hours. People who track are consistently surprised by the total — that surprise is the point.
A deposit limit is a decision made once, when you are calm, that binds the version of you who is tilted at 2am. Willpower is a decision you have to make again every single time — and it fails exactly when it matters most. Set the rule while you feel fine.
Tools inside licensed clients
| Tool | What it does | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | Caps how much you can add per day, week or month | Tightening usually applies immediately; loosening has a waiting period, by design |
| Loss limit | Caps net losses over a period | Not offered everywhere — check your client |
| Session reminder | Alerts you after a set amount of play time | The cheapest useful tool; turn it on |
| Buy-in limit | Prevents moving up in stakes | Protects against tilt-driven stake jumps |
| Cool-off | Short-term account pause | Typically 24 hours to several weeks |
| Self-exclusion | Long-term account closure | Usually cannot be reversed before it expires |

Warning signs
Any one of these on its own may mean nothing. Several together are worth taking seriously.
- Playing longer or for more than you planned, repeatedly.
- Depositing again immediately after a loss.
- Hiding how much you play, or lying about results.
- Borrowing money, or using money set aside for something else.
- Restlessness or irritability when you cannot play.
- Playing to escape stress, low mood, or boredom rather than for enjoyment.
- Neglecting work, study, sleep, or relationships to keep playing.
Use the cool-off or self-exclusion tool in your client now, before the next session — not after it. Then talk to one of the independent services listed below. They are free, confidential, and not connected to any operator.
Three myths that cost people money
“I am due for a win.”
Cards have no memory. A long losing run does not make the next hand more likely to win. This is the gambler's fallacy, and it is the most expensive sentence in poker.
“I can win it back if I move up.”
Higher stakes mean stronger opponents and larger swings. Moving up while losing increases both the size and the speed of the damage.
“Skill means I cannot lose.”
Poker rewards skill over large samples, but variance is real and downswings of hundreds of buy-ins happen to winning players. Skill changes the long-run direction, not the short-run outcome.
